For a long time, it was claimed that 'fish oil is the ultimate source of Omega-3'. At plnktn, we have known for a long time that this is a misconception, and we want to set the record straight. That's why we are doing our part with our 'fish-free fish oil' campaign, a sustainable improvement of a commonly used supplement. This message will be displayed at 90 different tram and bus stops, with the aim of making people aware of a simple alternative: algal oil. A small change with a big impact.
The original source of Omega-3
It is one of the most commonly used supplements: fish oil. As a source of Omega-3, healthy fatty acids needed for, among other things, healthy blood pressure. We find that strange. Because fish themselves do not seem to produce Omega-3 but get it from their diet. And that diet happens to be algae. The alternative to omega-3 from fish, algal oil, has the same health benefits without the ecological disadvantages of overfishing. For example, the Dutch consumer program Keuringsdienst van Waarde revealed that no less than 30 anchovies are needed for 1 fish oil capsule (source). Let alone the bycatch.
Thom Siersema, founder of plnktn: 'Many people do not know that algae are the only true source of Omega-3. Fish oil is a commonly used supplement, and by replacing it with algal oil, we can all contribute to reducing unnecessary fishing. This not only benefits the environment but also sustainably contributes to our health. Billions of kilos of fish are still caught annually for Omega-3 supplements. This needs to change, and this change is within reach.'
Sustainability and transparency at the core
Plnktn was founded on the belief that the food and supplement industry can be simpler, more responsible, and more transparent. Algae are at the core of this: 'Our goal is to inspire people about the infinite power of algae,' explains Thom. 'With this campaign, we want to give algal oil the deserved platform as a sustainable and healthy alternative. Everyone should consume algae daily, something we strive for at plnktn.'
The launch of the 'fish-free fish oil' campaign is a step in the effort to make algae a fixed part of the daily diet, with minimal impact on nature.
