Omega-3

Your daily Omega-3
from the original source: algae

Plnktn Omega-3 contains at least 250 mg DHA and 125 mg EPA per capsule, from a 100% fish-free and plant-based source. The oil from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. provides pure Omega-3, exactly as nature intended. It has been scientifically proven that a daily intake of at least 250 mg Omega-3 is good for the heart, brain and vision (EFSA-approved health claims).

"More people and not enough fish"

70 percent of the world's population does not get the omega-3 they need. And if everyone in the world wanted to get it from fish, there simply isn't enough fish in the ocean. This is according to scientists at NTNU - Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Omega-3, good for your
heart, eyes and brain.

The Health Council advises 200 mg of omega-3 daily, but RIVM research shows that only 11.4% of Dutch people achieve this.

The dark side of omega-3 from fish

Annually, 17 billion kilograms of fish are caught for Omega-3, primarily for fish oil capsules. Did you know that one fish oil capsule can contain as many as 30 anchovies? This puts enormous pressure on our oceans, while fish are merely an intermediary. Algae are the original source of Omega-3: 100% plant-based and fish-free.

30 anchovies for one capsule

One pot of omega-3 requires around 30 anchovies — a direct contribution to overfishing.

Heated, pressed, deodorized

Anchovies are ground and heated, resulting in an oil with a strong smell and loss of purity.

It’s not just anchovies that die

Besides anchovies, plankton, juvenile fish, and other marine organisms also die due to industrial fishing.

Why fish? Omega-3 comes from algae

Fish don’t make omega-3 – they get it from algae, so you may as well go straight to the source, cultivated on land.

Why Omega-3 Fatty Acids?

Omega-3 fats are polyunsaturated fatty acids. Scientific research shows that at least 250mg of Omega-3 is good for your heart, brain and eyes (health claims approved by the EFSA).

Why algal oil instead of fish oil?

Algae oil is a plant-based alternative to fish oil. Fish get their Omega-3 from algae. By using algae oil, you get Omega-3 directly from the source, without the need for fish. Good for you and better for the oceans!

How much Omega-3 do I need per day?

The Health Council advises adults to consume 200 mg of Omega-3 from fish daily.

Do you eat little to no fatty fish? One dose of our algal oil contains 250 mg DHA and 125 mg EPA, a good (and responsible) substitute!

When is the best time to take Omega-3?

We recommend 1 capsule per day during or immediately after a meal.

Is the Omega-3 free from allergens?

Yes, it is free of allergens.

Is Omega-3 safe to take during pregnancy/breastfeeding?

Yes, it is safe to take during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

What is omega 3?

Omega-3 is a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids, including ALA, EPA, and DHA. These are fatty acids that the body cannot produce itself or in sufficient quantities, and which you therefore obtain from food or supplements. EPA and DHA occur naturally in algae and oily fish.

What are the ingredients of our Omega-3?

Oil from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp., high oleic sunflower oil,
d-alpha-tocopherol, antioxidants: rosemary extract, mixed tocopherols, ascorbyl palmitate. Capsule: hydroxypropyl starch; humectant: glycerol; gelling agent: carrageenan; purified water.

Here is some more context on the ingredients:

  • Oil from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp: This is the active ingredient: the source of DHA and EPA, the omega-3 fatty acids that the supplement is all about.
  • Sunflower oil: Present as a carrier oil, in the minimum required amount of approximately 10%. Its contribution to your total omega-6 intake is therefore small, especially in proportion to the amount of omega-3 you get from the supplement.
  • D-alpha-tocopherol, rosemary extract, mixed tocopherols, and ascorbyl palmitate: Omega-3 fatty acids are susceptible to oxidation, which can quickly degrade quality and shelf life. These four ingredients are antioxidants that protect the oil. D-alpha-tocopherol is simply a natural form of vitamin E, and ascorbyl palmitate is a fat-soluble form of vitamin C. Without this protection, the omega-3 would quickly degrade.
  • Hydroxypropyl starch, glycerol, carrageenan, and purified water: These are the four ingredients of the capsule itself. They make the softgel possible, not the supplement.

Does omega 3 have side effects?

Omega 3 is generally well-tolerated. Some people experience mild stomach or intestinal complaints at higher doses, such as bloating, nausea, or belching.

What foods contain omega-3?

Omega 3 is found in fatty fish, among other things, but also in algae. Algae are the original source of EPA and DHA. Fish consume these fatty acids through their diet, which is why they contain omega 3.

What does omega 3 do for your body?

Omega-3 fatty acids play a role in various bodily processes. With a daily intake of 250mg of EPA and DHA, these fatty acids contribute to the normal functioning of the heart. DHA also contributes to the maintenance of normal brain function and normal vision.
