Fewer than 1 in 9 Dutch people get enough omega-3 from fish.

Neither do you, probably. Not your fault. But it is your choice what you do with it.

Do you eat little or no oily fish? Then you belong to the 89% of the Netherlands that consumes too little omega-3. This is according to the Food Consumption Survey by the RIVM from 2021. The Health Council advises at least once a week oily fish to get your daily EPA and DHA. You don't have to make a drama out of it. But omega-3 has demonstrable benefits for your heart, brain, and eyes — and if you consistently consume too little, you're simply missing out on those benefits.

What exactly is omega-3, and why do you need it?

Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are essential. And this time, that's not just an empty marketing term: your body produces very little of them on its own. So, you need to get them through your diet.

EPA and DHA contribute to the normal functioning of the heart, brain, and vision (EU Regulation No. 432/2012). Not as a vague promise, but as a documented physiological function.

Four things most people don't know:

  • Fish don't produce omega-3 themselves.

Fish eat algae, store EPA and DHA in their tissue, and then you eat the fish. Algae are the real source. All this time.

  • Farm-raised fish hardly eat any algae.

Farm-raised salmon nowadays mainly eat soy and grains. As a result, their omega-3 content has dropped to less than half of what it once was. KRO-NCRV called them "swimming chickens."

  • Fish oil oxidizes quickly.

Fat that comes into contact with oxygen breaks down. That's called oxidation — and that's why fish oil smells, causes burping, and degrades in quality. The TOTOX value measures this oxidation. The lower, the better.

  • Algae oil skips the intermediate step.

The same EPA and DHA, directly from the source, without fish in between. And because algae oil can be processed directly and cleanly, its oxidation value (TOTOX) is consistently lower — plnktn is always below 5 for crude oil, whereas fish oil often goes towards 20+. That means: no smell, no burping, better quality.

Why algae oil is better

Why algae oil is better

Fish has always been an intermediary step. Now we're skipping it.

1. Farmed fish is not what it used to be

More than 70% of the salmon we eat comes from farms. This fish barely eats algae anymore. Result: the omega-3 content of farmed salmon has dropped by more than 50% in the past twenty years. (Source: KRO-NCRV Pointer, 2023)

2. Fish oil: smell, burps, oxidation

Fish oil is unstable. As soon as fish acid oxidizes, degradation products are formed that reduce quality and cause that typical fish smell and aftertaste. A TOTOX value measures this oxidation: the higher the value, the more the fat has broken down. The industry accepts values up to 26. plnktn Omega-3 is structurally below 5 for crude oil, and 5-10 for the capsule.

3. 17 billion kilograms of fish per year, purely for fish oil

Every year, approximately 17 billion kilograms of wild fish are caught worldwide — not for consumption, but to be processed into fish oil and fishmeal. (Source: FAO, The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture, 2022) That is not a marginal fact. That is the foundation of the supplement industry.

4. 30 anchovies per capsule

How concrete is that? On average, 30 anchovies go into one fish oil capsule. This was revealed in research by Keuringsdienst van Waarde. Anyone who takes fish oil daily consumes more than 10,000 fish per year. By switching to algal oil, you completely eliminate that.

5. plnktn Omega-3: at the source

Our algal oil is cultivated in Europe, in closed systems without seawater or wild fish. 100% plant-based. No fishy smell. No burps. The same EPA and DHA — without the detour.

What's in it, and how much do you need?

Plnktn Omega-3 Capsules

1 capsule daily, with a meal — 250 mg DHA + 125 mg EPA. That's it.

Plnktn Omega-3 Liquid

Per 2.5 ml (1 teaspoon): 250 mg DHA + 125 mg EPA + 10 µg vitamin D3. In MCT oil as a carrier oil, with natural antioxidants and Sicilian lemon oil for a fresh taste. No fishy aftertaste. Ideal for those who don't want to swallow capsules — and for children (consult a doctor if in doubt).

Plnktn Omega+

Our most complete variant: same omega-3 dosage (250 mg DHA + 125 mg EPA) combined with 1.5 mg astaxanthin per day (2 capsules). Astaxanthin is the red pigment from algae and has shown an antioxidant effect in laboratory research that is up to 600x more powerful than that of vitamin C (in vitro; individual effects may vary). It protects the omega-3 from oxidation — from within.

All variants are free from fish, dairy, gluten, and soy. Produced in EU-certified facilities.

I've been taking omega-3 for years, but always with those unpleasant fishy burps. Luckily, those are gone with plnktn omega-3.
I never really ate fish and wasn't aware of the importance of omega-3. Now I use plnktn's omega-3 daily to support my health.
The liquid variant is perfect. I just put it in my smoothie. No taste, no fuss. I've been doing it for three months now and it's the easiest habit I have.

What is the difference between algae oil and fish oil?

Fish oil comes from wild or farmed fish. Algae oil is extracted directly from algae — the actual source of EPA and DHA. Algae oil is more stable, has no fishy odor, and skips the entire food chain. The end result — EPA and DHA — is the same.

What is a TOTOX value and why does it matter?

TOTOX stands for Total Oxidation Value. It is a measure of how oxidized a fat is — broken down by contact with oxygen. The higher the value, the poorer the quality. The industry accepts values up to 26. We consistently deliver below 5. You can see it, smell it, and taste it.

Can I still take it if I regularly eat fish?

Yes. Oily wild fish like mackerel or herring provide omega-3, but the amount varies greatly, and farmed fish often provide too little. If you want to be sure that your daily needs are met, supplementing with algae oil is a logical choice - even for fish eaters.

Is it suitable for children?

The liquid variant is most suitable for this. The dosage can be easily adjusted. If in doubt about the correct dose for young children, we recommend consulting a doctor or dietitian.

Can I cancel the subscription at any time?

Yes. No notice period, no penalties, no complicated forms. You arrange it yourself in your account or send an email. Done.

How are your algae grown?

In large fermentation tanks, on land — no ocean needed. The algae grow on sugar as a food source, converting low-grade raw materials into high-quality nutrients. It requires hardly any land and nothing is extracted from the sea. This is precisely why algae cultivation is one of the most sustainable production methods we know.
