Product details

Spirulina

One ingredient,
exceptionally nutritious

Plnktn spirulina consists of a single ingredient: spirulina, cultivated in the Netherlands
and dried using a gentle technique (freeze-drying) to maximize nutrient retention.
Naturally rich in proteins (~65%), the pigment phycocyanin,
and other bioactive compounds. Compact, plant-based, and a meaningful addition
to your daily diet.

Four capsules a day provide ~2 grams of spirulina with 285 mg phycocyanin, 1.5 mg zeaxanthin, 11 μg vitamin K1 (15% RDI), and 749 μg beta-carotene.

- Phycocyanin (15%): exclusively present in blue-green algae,
researched for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
- A natural source of protein (65%), fiber (15%), beta-carotene,
and zeaxanthin.
- Plant-based, sustainable, and suitable as a supplement to any diet!

Produced in the Netherlands

More than 80% of the current algae supplements on the market come from Asia. Often grown in open ponds, with vague supply chains and uncontrollable quality.

We deliberately choose not to use cheap bulk algae from Asia, but rather high-quality, locally grown algae directly from the Netherlands. For example, from the Prinsenbroeders: two brothers who converted an old tulip greenhouse into an algae farm.

Why would I need Spirulina?

Spirulina is a nutrient-dense addition to your daily diet. We believe that algae are a valuable addition to everyone's diet. It's a category you rarely see in daily diets, even though it's a natural, plant-based, and sustainable source of nutrients. Algae contain unique nutrients that you don't get from your food, such as phycocyanin.

Spirulina is interesting because it is naturally rich in proteins and bioactive compounds, such as phycocyanin, chlorophyll, and carotenoids. This is precisely why spirulina is extensively researched.

Various possible health effects are associated with spirulina, such as supporting energy, muscles, the immune system, blood sugar, weight management, and antioxidant processes. In Europe, these claims are classified as on-hold claims: they are awaiting final European approval and may only be used with a disclaimer.

Spirulina is also being researched in relation to cholesterol. For example, a small study in Greece showed positive changes in cholesterol levels after 12 weeks of supplementation with 1 gram of spirulina per day.

What makes your Spirulina unique?

More than 80% of the current algae supplements on the market come from Asia. Often grown in open ponds, with vague supply chains and uncontrollable quality.

We deliberately choose not to use cheap bulk algae from Asia, but rather high-quality, locally grown algae directly from the Netherlands. For example, from the Prinsenbroeders: two brothers who converted an old tulip greenhouse into an algae farm.

How much Spirulina should I take?

We recommend a dosage of 2 grams (4 capsules) per day as a supplement to a varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Do I need Spirulina in addition to Plankton?

Our Plankton product also contains spirulina, but it's combined with three other algae. This means the proportion of spirulina is lower than in our pure spirulina product. Do you mainly want a broad base of different algae? Then Plankton is a good choice for you :)

If you want to specifically add extra spirulina, for example, for phycocyanin and carotenoids, then you can easily use spirulina alongside it.

There is no official EFSA upper limit set for the daily intake of spirulina. Therefore, we have looked at the relevant nutrients, such as manganese, zinc, and iodine. When used according to the recommended dosage, these remain well within safe margins.

In short: you can easily combine Plankton and spirulina. Plankton is your broad algae base, and spirulina is a targeted supplement.

Is Spirulina free from allergens?

Yes, as far as we know, Spirulina is free from allergens.

Is Spirulina suitable for children and/or during pregnancy/breastfeeding?

Spirulina is safe for children.

For pregnant women and during breastfeeding, we recommend that you first discuss this with your doctor, as there is insufficient research into the use of algae during these periods.

Should I choose Spirulina or Chlorella?

Spirulina and Chlorella are similar because they are both natural microalgae, grown in the Netherlands, with unprecedented nutritional density. However, there are also significant differences:

Spirulina is officially a cyanobacterium and has a softer cell structure. It is a nutritious daily supplement, partly due to its high protein content and substances such as phycocyanin (researched for its antioxidant potential), beta-carotene, and, like Chlorella, chlorophyll and vitamin K1. Spirulina is often associated with energy, sports, and recovery!

Chlorella is an algae with a robust cell wall. As a result, chlorella naturally contains relatively high amounts of fiber. Additionally, chlorella contains a lot of chlorophyll (the green pigment from which the algae gets its color), vitamin B12, and vitamin K1.

Both products come from the Netherlands, and we deliberately keep their formulation pure: Spirulina is 100% Arthrospira platensis, and Chlorella contains 100% Chlorella sorokiniana. Both are in a vegetable HPMC capsule and have the same dosage: 4 capsules per day.

In summary: spirulina has relatively more protein, and chlorella contains relatively more fiber! Both contain chlorophyll and K1. Spirulina also contains phycocyanin, an interesting bioactive substance that is widely researched for its possible role as an antioxidant, and Chlorella contains vitamin B12 :)

How quickly do I notice the effects of taking Spirulina?

Spirulina is not a product where you should expect to feel an immediate noticeable effect. It naturally contains various nutrients (such as proteins, fibre, phycocyanin, and carotenoids) that primarily contribute to your daily nutritional intake, and less to an acute "feeling."

View spirulina primarily as a supplement to your daily diet. If you notice an effect, it usually happens gradually over several weeks :)
