What exactly is omega-3?
Omega-3 is a collective term for fatty acids that your body uses in various processes. The most important ones are ALA, EPA, and DHA.
ALA primarily comes from plant-based foods. EPA and DHA are found in fish and algae. The difference isn't just in the source, but mainly in what your body can do with them. ALA must first be converted before it can be used as EPA or DHA, and that conversion is limited.
EPA and DHA are utilized directly by your body. That's why the focus in nutrition is often on these two forms.
Fatty fish as a familiar route
Salmon, mackerel, and herring are the most well-known sources of EPA and DHA. These fish store omega-3 because they consume it through their diet.
What is less visible: fish do not produce it themselves. They obtain it from their food chain, which ultimately starts with microorganisms in the ocean.
Fish is therefore not the origin, but a link in a larger system.
Plant-based sources and their role
In plant-based foods, it's primarily about ALA. You find it in products like flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, and certain vegetable oils.
These sources contribute to your total intake but follow a different route in your body. ALA is partially converted to EPA and DHA, but not in large quantities. As a result, it mainly plays a supplementary role in your diet.
The often-overlooked source: algae
Algae are the starting point of omega-3 in nature. They produce EPA and DHA themselves, without an intermediate step via fish.
From that basis, omega-3 enters the rest of the food chain. Fish consume it by eating algae, after which it flows further to what we ultimately eat.
If you go back one layer, the perspective changes. Then you see that omega-3 doesn't start with fish or plants, but with microalgae.
How it comes together in your daily diet
So, omega-3 isn't found in a single product or category. It's spread across different choices you make in a day.
Sometimes it comes from fish, sometimes from plant-based foods, sometimes almost unconsciously. And that makes it less a question of "what is it in?", but rather how you see it reflected in your overall dietary pattern.
