Omega-3 uit algen, waarom beter?

Omega-3 from algae, why is it better?

plnktn. started as a distinctive brand that believes in the power of algae. This power is the basis of everything we do, every day. Helping people live healthier by offering products that come from the most important source of life, algae.

We started looking for healthy and sustainable alternatives for foods based on algae. When we delved into the complex and obscure supplement industry, we quickly concluded that we can make a real impact by replacing fish oil with algae oil, the source of omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fatty acids that are important for a number of functions in the body. The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are found in various types of fish, such as oily fish. Eating one portion of fish per week helps against cardiovascular diseases and lowers blood pressure. However, research shows that only 30% of Dutch people eat fish once a week.

Therefore, in recent years there has been an increasing interest in omega-3 from supplements, which has led to an increasing pressure on the fish population (including salmon, tuna and trout). As a result, there has been an increase in the mass fishing industry and fish farming; the breeding of fish in industrial fish farms in captivity. The process of extracting omega-3 from fish is as follows. Omega-3 chain

In total, 156 million kilos of fish are caught for human consumption each year, of which 10 percent is only intended for the production of omega-3 supplements. Can we save this 10 percent? And replace it with a more sustainable alternative?

We think so.

Omega-3 from microalgae makes it possible to consume omega-3 without fishing the ocean empty and will prove to be a more sustainable solution in the future. More research is being done on the life cycle assessment of the heterotrophic microalgae Schizochytrium that is used for the plnktn. omega-3.

The most impressive benefit that came out of the research was that the production of the microalgae and canola oil mixture used 1/29th of the plant and animal resources required to produce fish oil. Therefore, that we at plnktn. find it a logical choice to return to the source of Omega-3 (algae) and thus prevent unnecessary fishing. Cut out the middle man!
